NBA Commissioner David Stern and union director Billy Hunter have held secret meetings. The league has threatened to cancel the entire season if an agreement is not reached soon.
And UCLA center Dan Gadzuric is just glad to be playing college basketball.
Last spring, before he came to UCLA, Gadzuric was considered a candidate to make himself available for the NBA draft. Though only a freshman, he is 20 years old and, at 6 feet 10 and 245 pounds, has a body that caught the attention of pro scouts.
But his coming to Westwood is looking like a smarter choice every day.
"I'm playing right now and having fun," Gadzuric said. "There's no NBA, so it's good to be here."
With the Bruins resuming practice in preparation for Tuesday's game against Loyola Marymount, freshman Ray Young is no doubt working off extra pounds. Young spent the holidays at home in Alameda, Calif., where his mother, Lynette, is known for her cooking.
"Some real good home-cooked food," Young said. "Stuffing, a lot of meat, fried chicken, baked chicken, some turkey, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler. A festive eating session."
