Wolverines Feel Munoz's Pain

Russell Lakey and Alex Minn each scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but the Harvard-Westlake boys' basketball team, playing without point guard Victor Munoz, fell short in a comeback bid and lost, 69-64, to Loyola in a Mission League game Monday night.

Munoz missed the game with a knee injury he sustained Friday against St. Francis. Harvard-Westlake, ranked fourth in The Times' regional poll, lost its first league game since 1994, when Loyola defeated a Wolverine team that featured Jason and Jarron Collins as freshmen.

Harvard-Westlake (13-3, 1-1) trailed 43-22 in the third period, but when Minn hit a three-point shot with one minute left, the Wolverines pulled to within two, 64-62. Loyola (12-5, 3-0) sank five free throws to seal the decision.

In another Mission League game:

Chaminade 73, Alemany 50--Justin Beach had 20 points and Scott Long added 16 and had nine rebounds for the second-ranked Eagles (13-1, 2-0) at L.A. Baptist High.


Thousand Oaks 1, Simi Valley 0--Jeremy Terrell kicked in the rebound of missed header by Nathan Chu after a free kick for the Lancers (8-2-3, 4-0-1) with eight minutes remaining in the second overtime of a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley (8-4-1, 1-2-1).

Newbury Park 1, Royal 1--Casey Schmidt scored the tying goal for the Panthers (6-5-2, 1-2-1) with an assist from Pawel Gago in the 64th minute of a Marmonte League match at Royal (12-4-3, 2-1-2).

Alemany 2, Chaminade 1--Bryan Peterson scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute for the host Indians (4-6, 1-1), who snapped a 14-game Mission League losing streak dating to the 1995-96 season.

Alemany's Andy Sutton scored the tying goal in the 50th minute after Chaminade (4-5-3, 0-2) took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Owen Petersen .


Chaminade 4, Alemany 1--Erin Granados' goal in the 16th minute gave the Indians (5-6-3, 1-1-1) short-lived hopes for a Mission League upset of the host Eagles (15-1-1, 2-0).

Simi Valley 2, Thousand Oaks 0--Cara DeStefano scored both goals for the Pioneers (9-5, 4-1) in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Agoura 2, Channel Islands 0--Jennifer Graham scored her 12th goal and April Blaker also scoredfor the host Chargers (12-3-1, 4-1) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
