Ready to debate everything from biological weapons to Russia and NATO, more than 1,500 students from across the state gathered Friday at Mission Viejo High School for the 15th annual Model United Nations Conference.

Students, assigned to 31 countries, have prepared for months for the three-day conference, designed to re-create workings of the United Nations.

Patrick M. Morgan, who oversees special programs in the department of politics and society at UC Irvine, delivered the keynote speech during opening ceremonies.

Saddleback Valley Unified School District students in fifth through eighth grades will act as pages. The conference is open to the public.
