Cheverton Unexpectedly Resigns From City Council

January 17, 1998|MIMI KO CRUZ

Councilman David M. Cheverton unexpectedly announced his resignation this week, citing increased job responsibilities that leave him without ample time for his elected duties.

The 39-year-old computer programmer said his expanded work at the Irvine marketing firm of Alcone Simms O'Brien requires frequent travel out of state.

Cheverton delivered his news at Thursday's council meeting, reading from a prepared statement: "I am finding it continually difficult to make the time to perform the duties and obligations of the office to which I have been elected."

Cheverton said his resignation will take effect Jan. 31.

He served as a planning commissioner for two years before being elected to his council seat in 1990 and won reelection four years later. He served as mayor in 1994 and 1997.
