January 18, 1998

* Art for Fun(d)s Sake, the fund-raising arm of the Palos Verdes Art Center, has announced that it netted more than $100,000 in 1997 with events including a William Travilla fashion show, a garden party and an arts and crafts fair. In addition, the center's La Societe de Pourcentage, a group of members who match a percentage of the funds raised, contributed $21,000 for the year. The Art Center offers exhibitions, education and community outreach projects.

* During activities celebrating its 75th anniversary this month, the Webb Schools in Claremont received a $2-million gift from alumnus Robert A. Hefner of Aspen, Colo. Hefner, a member of the class of 1959, was inspired by his former science teacher, Raymond A. Alf, 92, who will be reunited with Hefner on a visit to the campus on Monday. Half of the donation will establish a science chair honoring Alf, and the other half will go to an endowment for future purchases of science equipment.
