Jason Collins Might Take a Redshirt Year

January 20, 1998

Stanford freshman Jason Collins, who helped lead Harvard-Westlake to the state Division III boys' basketball title last season, probably will use a redshirt year to fully recover from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

The seventh-ranked Cardinal (16-0) had been optimistic that the 6-foot-10 Collins would be able to return to the team this season, but his recovery has been slowed by a cyst on the right knee.

Collins' twin, Jarron, has been a key reserve for Stanford. The Collinses were The Times' Valley co-players of the year last season.

Dandy debut: Former Newbury Park pitcher Chris Thogersen, a freshman at San Francisco, picked up a win in his collegiate debut Saturday in Hawaii. Thogersen allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings of relief in the Dons' 12-8 win over Hawaii. Former Calabasas catcher Josh Goldfield, also a freshman, had two hits for San Francisco.

Revving up: The Ventura Racing Association, which sanctions all stock car racing at Ventura Raceway, will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Friday in the Gem and Mineral building at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

Topics will be rule changes and the schedule for 1998. Copies of both will be available at the meeting.

The VRA includes fans as well as competitors. Members receive discounts at the pit gate, front gate and souvenir stand throughout the season. The meeting will include car registration and VRA membership.
