Chevron, McDonald's Open Joint Operation

January 21, 1998

For many years, El Segundo has fought off the encroachment of fast-food restaurants, but that changed Tuesday with the opening of a combined McDonald's restaurant and Chevron service station on Sepulveda Boulevard.

"It's the 1990s and that's what people are looking for," Mayor Sandra Jacobs said of the restaurant located at the edge of the Chevron Refinery. "We were tired of watching all our sales tax dollars heading south to Manhattan Beach because people wanted a McDonald's."

The Chevron-McDonald's is part of national alliance between the two companies to open one-stop retail operations across the country. The El Segundo site--the ninth in the Los Angeles area--features a gas station and food mart in addition to a McDonald's with a 24-hour drive-through window.

"We're very pleased with the project," said Chevron spokesman Rod Spackman. "It's been placed in an area where there is a fairly significant amount of traffic and we expect it to be a big draw."
