Fund Established to Aid Officer Paralyzed in Shooting

January 21, 1998

The family of the reserve Maywood police officer who was left paralyzed after he and his son were shot in the garage of their Pico Rivera townhome has set up a fund for his medical bills.

Richard Elizondo, 34, remains hospitalized in critical condition since an unidentified gunman shot him in the neck Thursday. His family said Tuesday that the 16-year law enforcement veteran can mouth words and his 15-year-old son, also named Richard, is reportedly recovering from wounds to the chest and arm.

Elizondo worked for the Hawaiian Gardens Police Department before that agency was absorbed by the Sheriff's Department, which did not hire him as a deputy, said his brother Lorenzo. As a reserve officer, Elizondo has no health insurance, he said.

"My brother has served his community through law enforcement for 16 years, and now he needs some help from his community," said Lorenzo Elizondo.

Checks can be made out to the Maywood Police Officers Assn., with a memo to 999/Elizondo, or by calling the Maywood Police at (213) 562-5008.
