Westar Has Two Years to Move Division

January 21, 1998|JOHN CANALIS

A company that makes nutritional supplements near West Side homes has two years to move the manufacturing side of its operation.

Westar Nutrition had asked the City Council for an extension of its manufacturing license. Responding to neighbors' complaints about odors they suspect are coming from the Victoria Street plant, the council denied the request.

In 1991, the Planning Commission had given Westar a permit to package vitamins and other products.

But last year, after hearing from neighbors who were upset about the situation, the council approved a laundry list of restrictions.

The two-year limit was among them.

Westar officials said they wanted three to five years to relocate.

Council members also rezoned the area to prohibit manufacturing in the future.

New developments can either be residential or commercial.
