Northridge Beefs Up Roster

January 22, 1998|FERNANDO DOMINGUEZ

Cal State Northridge, without a head football coach, signed three more transfers Wednesday, including David Lins and Beau Cherry from Valley College.

The signings increased to five the number of players secured by the Matadors in the past few days.

Lins, 6 feet 3 and 185 pounds, played at Valley in 1995-96 and passed for 2,558 yards and 26 touchdowns in his sophomore season. His 64.4% completion rate (186 of 289 passes) is second-best in Monarch history for one season.

Lins, a former All-Southern Section Division I selection at Crespi High, attended San Diego Mesa last fall but did not play football.

Cherry, 6-1 and 265 pounds, was an All-Western State Conference Southern Division center at Valley in 1996. The Saugus High graduate played last season at Division I-A Eastern Michigan.

The Matadors signed tackle Frank Alvarez, 6-4 and 250 pounds, who played at Wilmington Banning High and was a redshirt at Colorado State in 1996. He did not play last year.

Earlier, the Matadors signed running back Jaumal Bradley and defensive end Ryan Hourigan.

Bradley, 5-10 and 215, is from Mt. San Antonio, the J.C. Grid-Wire's mythical national junior college champion last season which defeated City College of San Francisco, 38-35, in the California title game.

Hourigan, 6-3 and 250 pounds, was an All-WSC Southern Division second-team selection last season at Valley after playing at Hart High.
