Fargas Sweepstakes to End Tuesday

January 24, 1998

After months of speculation, All-American running back Justin Fargas of Notre Dame High will announce his college choice Tuesday in a press conference at the Sherman Oaks campus, Coach Kevin Rooney said Friday.

Fargas met this week at home with coaches from the three schools he is considering: UCLA, USC and Michigan.

Off we go: Jonathan Hicks, an All-City defensive lineman from North Hollywood, has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy.

Rule violation: Not two weeks after players at Rio Mesa High and Oxnard were found to have illegally participated in outside competition during the boys' high school season, region power Royal joined the group.

Highlander Coach Kevin Corley said senior forward Rene Marquez, a sometime starter who saw extensive action, has been dismissed from the team after he participated in an outside league.

"We had told him not to [play in the league] in front of the whole team and then we found out he did anyway," Corley said. "I told him, 'You know what that means; turn in your gear.' "

Last chance: Final registration and tryouts for the spring season of Northridge Little League are scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northridge Little League complex on Devonshire, between Reseda and Wilbur.

The league is for players 5 through 15. Information: (818) 368-4654.
