A gunman who opened fire on police on the nation's busiest toll bridge is the prime suspect in the slaying of a Houston-area investment banker, police said Friday.
Sergai Taio Daigre Jr., 20, was in critical but stable condition Friday after surgery. Police said he shot himself in the head Thursday during a predawn standoff that closed the Bay Bridge for 3 1/2 hours.
Police saw the gunman before 5 a.m. in a Porsche parked at Yerba Buena Island, which divides the bridge's two segments.
A computer check showed the car was stolen June 26 from investment banker Andrew Loomis, police said. As two officers approached, the gunman ran into the bridge tunnel, waving a gun at commuters. He exchanged fire with police before hiding behind a barrier and then turning the gun on himself, police said.
