Chancellor Fills Interim Position

July 05, 1998|MIGUEL BUSTILLO

The chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District has appointed an interim vice chancellor for human resources while the district conducts a national search to fill the position.

The college board of trustees has approved a plan to place the vice chancellor position at the same level as a college president and allow Chancellor Philip Westin to make an interim appointment.

Westin chose Jack P. Lipton, a lawyer and licensed psychologist who is also an adjunct faculty member of Pepperdine University's graduate school of education and psychology. Lipton, who earned his law degree from the University of Arizona, has written two books and published more than 40 papers on law and psychology.

"I am extremely pleased that Dr. Lipton has assumed interim leadership for the human services department," Westin said in a news release. "Jack brings both practical and intellectual knowledge to a pivotal position at a time when the district requires continuity."

The college district has already conducted two national searches to fill the position when it was considered lower in the bureaucratic structure, but neither led to an appointment. After a study of 19 other state community college districts, college officials decided the position should be enhanced.
