Critic's Pick

'Out to Sea'

July 12, 1998|Kevin Thomas

This 1997 release is a classic shipboard farce that gives full play to Jack Lemmon's (right) and Walter Matthau's (left) formidable comic gifts that are deftly played against genuine sentiment. A wide array of esteemed veterans glow under the direction of Martha Coolidge, who can always be counted upon to bring out all the gleaming facets of both script and cast. Among those aboard are Dyan Cannon and Elaine Stritch (HBO Sunday at 8 a.m.; 7 p.m. and Thursday at 8:00 a.m.; 7 p.m.).
