Director of Boys, Girls Club Resigns

July 15, 1998|DEBRA CANO

The Boys and Girls Club of Placentia is again searching for an executive director to lead the organization, which struggled financially but has regained community support. Club officials Tuesday announced that executive director Ruben Alvarez Jr. resigned for other job prospects.

The club hired Alvarez in February 1997 after firing a previous director amid allegations of financial wrongdoing.

"He took the role in a tough time for the Boys and Girls Club in terms of community perception and uncertainty," said board member Chris Lowe. "We're very sorry to have him leave. . . . He took the club in a new direction."

Alvarez was successful in getting a $25,000 donation from the city last year to pay for the club's operating expenses, including insurance and utilities. The City Council recently agreed to give the club $12,500 this year.

"His public relations skills in bringing the club to the forefront, to the attention of the community, [were] certainly one of his strengths. We're certainly going to miss that," said Placentia City Administrator Robert D'Amato.
