Opportunities for Volunteering

The Volunteer Center Assistance League of Southern California, 8132 Van Nuys Blvd., Suite 200, Panorama City, is seeking individuals with mechanical skills to refurbish used wheelchairs.

The center is also looking for volunteers interested in taking part in after-school activities such as tutoring and mentoring. For more information, contact the center at (818) 908-5040 or at the Web site, www.volunteers.org.

The Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge needs volunteers to serve as ushers at events and organize special programs and activities. A meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 in the lobby of the center, on the east side of campus. For more information, call (818) 677-5768 or (818) 677-3943.

The San Fernando Valley Literacy Council needs volunteers to help adults improve their reading and writing skills. Tutor training will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Saturday.

The council is also looking for English as a Second Language instructors. ESL training will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. All training courses will be held at the First Methodist Church, 6260 Tyrone Ave., Van Nuys. For more information, call (818) 341-4009 or (818) 893-5216.

The Reserve Corps of the Los Angeles Police Department needs volunteer reserve officers. Prospective volunteers will receive training two nights a week every other weekend. For more information, call the LAPD Reserve Unit at (213) 847-4766.
