Airliner Makes Landing After Bird Damages Engine

July 24, 1998

An Alaska Airlines jetliner made a successful emergency landing at Burbank Airport on Thursday night after sucking a bird into one of its two engines while taking off, officials said.

The bird ended up in the right engine of the MD-80 airliner moments after the plane lifted off at 5:56 p.m. on a flight to Portland, Ore.

The damaged engine was shut down and the plane returned to the airport. None of the 95 passengers or five crew members were injured.

The plane was taken out of service for repairs, forcing the cancellation of several flights.
