1,000 Cyclists Expected for Annual Grand Prix

July 25, 1998

More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to compete in the 37th annual Manhattan Beach Grand Prix on Sunday, officials said.

"All the top cycling teams in the nation will be represented," said race director Eric Smith. "This event always attracts top athletes. Many use it as a warmup for the World Championships."

The race, which follows a 1.4-mile course that begins and ends at Live Oak Park, is organized by the Manhattan Beach Lions Club and the South Bay Wheelmen cycling organization. Proceeds support Lions Club programs for the elderly and children, including scholarships at Mira Costa High School.

The event begins at 7 a.m. with novice cyclists and culminates with professional racers at 12:30 p.m. Entry fees are $5 to $40.

Information is available at (310) 371-6293.
