Learning Takes Flight at Aerospace Camp

July 25, 1998

Three hundred children built tiny aircraft and learned the fundamentals of flight from Boeing engineers at the aerospace giant's Downey facility Friday.

The students, ages 9 to 17, held races and tested their aircraft in wind tunnels at the Discover Engineering Summer Science Camp, which ends today.

"It's very hands-on," said Lea Edgar Petersen, a Boeing spokeswoman. "What they learn here they could never learn anywhere else."

Among the teachers was NASA astronaut Marsha S. Ivins, a veteran of four space flights.
