City Gets $3-Million Grant for Retraining Program

July 29, 1998

The city will get nearly $3 million in federal funds to provide training and other services to workers left jobless by defense cuts and other downsizing, state officials announced.

Gov. Pete Wilson allocated $2,859,499 over two years for a retraining program run by Cal State Long Beach, the governor's office said Monday.

The program is designed to give people who have some computer background the software skills to compete for high-paying jobs, said Suzanne Schroeder, a spokeswoman for the Employment Development Department. The funds will help provide new skills to those laid off after recent business mergers, downsizing and canceled defense and NASA contracts, she said.
