July 30, 1998|ERIKA CHAVEZ

A 22-year-old cyclist was struck and fatally injured by a car that may have run a red light, police said Wednesday.

Matthew Daniel Mills of Anaheim was riding south on Lewis Street at Katella Avenue about 5 p.m. Tuesday when a car going east on Katella hit him, police said.

Witnesses said the driver had entered the intersection driving between 35 and 40 mph after the light had turned red, police said.

After hitting Mills, the driver veered abruptly and struck another car, resulting in minor damage. Neither driver was injured.

Mills was pronounced dead at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

There was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident, investigators said, and no criminal charges had been filed Wednesday.

Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to call Anaheim police at (714) 765-1861.
