Michael Briney Declared Winner in Special School Board Election

July 30, 1998

Michael D. Briney won Tuesday's special election to fill a seat on the school board, according to the county registrar-recorder's office.

With all four precincts reporting, Briney had 1,009 votes, or 68% of the votes. Challenger David W. Reeves had 476 votes, or 32% of the total. The vacancy on the four-member board was created when Margaret Echevarria resigned Jan. 16. The school board appointed Briney to fill the spot, but was forced to remove him a month later when a group of residents said they wanted to choose a candidate for themselves.

Reeves, a two-time board candidate, gathered the required signatures from residents in April to force the new election.
