In his first full season as a professional, Jon Garland is getting a taste of baseball's business side.
Garland, City Section 4-A Division player of the year in 1997 for Kennedy High, was traded Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs to the Chicago White Sox for reliever Matt Karchner.
Garland was 4-7 with a 5.03 earned-run average in 19 games with the Rockford (Ill.) Cubbies of the Class-A Midwest League. The right-hander allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings in a 10-3 victory over Ft. Wayne on Tuesday.
The Cubs selected Garland with the 10th pick of the draft last year, gave him a $1.465 million signing bonus and assigned him to rookie league in Mesa, Ariz. He finished 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 games.
Karchner is 2-4 with a 5.15 ERA and 11 saves in 32 games for the White Sox.
Scanning Tuesday's box scores:
Triple A--Derek Wallace (Chatsworth High, Pepperdine) picked up his 14th save by recording two outs in Norfolk's 4-3 victory over Indianapolis.
