6 Marijuana Plants Found in Bean Field

July 31, 1998|HOLLY J. WOLCOTT

Sheriff's deputies dug up and confiscated six large marijuana plants Thursday after the general manager of an Oxnard area farm spotted the pot growing on the edge of a 47-acre green bean field.

Authorities were called to Oceanview Produce Co. at 3000 E. Hueneme Road at 11:30 a.m. after manager Arnold Solis found the plants flourishing under Southern California Edison power lines.

Deputy Ryan Clark of the sheriff's Camarillo station borrowed a shovel from the farm and dug up the plants, which weighed a total of about 15 pounds, Sheriff's Sgt. Bruce Macedo said.

Because the plants would have needed to be dried and processed before being sold, the pot's street value could not be calculated, Macedo said.

There are no suspects and deputies doubt they will make an arrest unless a witness comes forward. The plants were booked into evidence and will be given to narcotics experts for destruction.

The plants were visible from the roadway and in an area frequented by farm and utility workers.

"I was going in there to check for weeds and weed out the regular weeds, not that type of weed," Solis said. "You'd never expect any of that in a wide open space. In a wooded area you would."
