School District Chief Plans to Retire July 1

June 03, 1998

After five years at the helm of the Redondo Beach Unified School District and 38 years as an educator in the South Bay, Beverly Rohrer will retire July 1, district officials said Tuesday.

The school board has named Assistant Supt. Bill Nunan as the new superintendent. Nunan has been serving as acting superintendent since Rohrer contracted an undisclosed illness last fall.

During her tenure, Rohrer sought to make Redondo Beach a cutting-edge school district. She spearheaded several technological projects in the district such as the Futures Academy, a consortium of South Bay school districts, colleges and universities and businesses. She also helped develop the Academy of Health and Fitness and established a fine arts academy that is scheduled to open in September.

Nunan, 49, said Rohrer will be a tough act to follow, but he looks forward to the challenge of being superintendent. Formerly with the Newport-Mesa District in Newport Beach for 27 years, Nunan joined the Redondo Beach District in August.
