Man Surrenders in Alleged Abduction

June 04, 1998

The man who allegedly abducted an 11-year-old girl whom police said he had "strong feelings for" has turned himself into police, authorities said Wednesday.

Police said Luis Herrera Galindo, 32, surrendered to Gardena police in North Hollywood at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. Sgt. Bob Michaelsen said Galindo had contacted a friend who called police to inform them that Galindo was at a residence in North Hollywood. Police asked the friend to urge Galindo to turn himself in and after several hours Galindo agreed.

Galindo was booked at the Gardena Police Department for child abduction, lewd or lascivious acts involving a child and penetration with a foreign object. Police said the girl went with Galindo willingly, but he will still be charged with abducting her because she is a minor.

Bail has been set at $100,000. Galindo is still in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned at South Bay Municipal Court in Torrance today.

Police contend that Galindo abducted the girl after a Memorial Day outing. At the urging of his parents, Galindo brought the girl back to Gardena last Thursday but police had been unable to find Galindo.
