Van Nuys, Hawthorne Win at Science Fair

June 06, 1998

Students from Van Nuys and Hawthorne high schools walked away with first-place awards at the 21st annual Robert Herndon Engineering and Science Seminar in El Segundo on Friday and students from Charles Drew Middle School near Watts took first place in their age group.

Students from 19 Los Angeles-area schools competed for U.S. Savings Bonds. The event's two categories were experiments and essays.

A 10-member team from Van Nuys High School took first place in the experiment category for "A Diet for Controlling Interstellar Stress," a blood-glucose stabilization diet for astronauts. A four-member team from Hawthorne High won in the essay competition for its entry titled "The Need for Reusable Fuel." The team from Charles Drew Middle School won for an experiment with water evaporation.

Sponsored by the Aerospace Corp., the fair is named for a former scientist and engineer with the organization and is aimed at generating student interest in the field. Based in El Segundo, Aerospace Corp. is a nonprofit research and development organization that supports Defense Department space programs.
