2 Arrested in Assault, Attempted Carjacking

June 08, 1998|NICK GREEN

Two men were dragged from their car and assaulted by about a dozen people in south Oxnard early Sunday in what police are calling an attempted carjacking.

The car's driver and passenger received bumps and bruises in the incident, but were not seriously injured, Oxnard police said.

Miguel Torres, 18, and a boy who was not identified because of his age were arrested as they attempted to flee the scene, police said. The pair were booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted carjacking.

The 1:05 a.m. incident began when a vehicle driven by Brian Bourgeois was boxed in by two vehicles parked immediately ahead and behind, near Channel Islands Boulevard and Albany Drive, police said.

About 12 or 13 males surrounded the vehicle, pulled passenger Donald Archie from it and began to batter him, police said. Bourgeois attempted to fight the assailants, and at least one bullet was fired before he managed to drive away, police said.

When Police Sgt. Martin Meyer arrived at the scene, he found Archie lying in the street. Archie was treated at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and released.

Torres is being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Police would not reveal the whereabouts of the minor.
