Mission's Garden Fest Coming This Weekend

June 10, 1998|SUSAN DEEMER

Amid lush rose gardens and historic ruins, thousands this weekend are expected to attend the third annual Mission San Juan Capistrano Flower and Garden Festival.

"The mission has a long tradition of having beautiful gardens and plants brought in from all parts of the world," said mission spokesman Jim Graves, explaining that Spanish padres imported many nonnative plants here 220 years ago.

The festival, beginning Saturday, will feature plant and garden vendors, artists, demonstrations and lectures by garden book authors Bob Smaus and Judith Handelsman. The event will also feature a children's garden, weavers, spinners, basket makers and a mini-farmer's market with organic fruits and vegetables.

The festival will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission for adults is $5, $4 for seniors and children. The mission is on Ortega Highway near Interstate 5.

Information: (949) 248-2048.
