June 10, 1998|MEGAN GARVEY

Vice President Al Gore will visit the San Fernando Valley on Saturday to host an education town hall meeting, his office announced Tuesday.

The invitation-only meeting at Sutter Middle School in Winnetka will focus on after-school programs for children.

"After-school programs are not only essential to providing our children with quality education, but they also keep them safe during the critical hours of 3 to 7 p.m.," Gore said in a statement released by his office.

Gore was invited to host the meeting by Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks), who is being challenged for reelection in the 24th Congressional District this fall by Republican Randy Hoffman.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-California), also running for reelection, is expected to attend.

The meeting is scheduled for 9:55 to 10:55 a.m.

A spokesman for Sherman's office said several hundred teachers, volunteers, PTA members and people who run after-school programs are being invited.
