Professor Gets Fulbright to Study in Mexico

June 11, 1998

The chairman of the Chicano studies department at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson has been selected for a Fulbright Scholar Award in Mexico during the 1998-99 academic year.

During a 10-month stay based in Mexico City, David Maciel will use the award to finish writing a book on the cinema of Mexico from the 1940s to present. The award is given annually to distinguished scholars and professionals to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries.

In addition, Maciel hopes to do some writing and research on a book about Mexico's policies and responses toward the immigration of its citizens to the United States. He wants to address how Mexico is reacting to the constant immigration of its residents to the United States.

"The Fulbright Award is a very unique and prestigious honor," said Maciel, who joined the Cal State Dominguez Hills faculty in 1996. "It certainly brings great distinction and honor upon me and by association, CSUDH."
