Hertz Tightens Rules on Mileage Awards

June 14, 1998

Hertz is backing off from frequent-flier awards for car renters by refiguring them and setting up its own awards program. The result: in many cases, fewer miles for rentals, especially short-term ones.

Hertz spokeswoman Lauren Garvey said the goal is to become "cost-effective." Instead of awarding 250 miles per corporate rental and 500 per leisure rental--typical in the industry--it awards one mile per dollar spent for corporate rentals, and two miles for leisure rentals.

Hertz is phasing in the policy over the next two months. It now also offers "#1 Awards," which let frequent renters earn points redeemable for golf putters and other items, in lieu of mileage. Avis said last week that it is negotiating with airlines to change its awards program, probably in the fall. Budget and Thrifty said they have no immediate plans for changes.
