Ex-MTA Official Named Transportation Manager

June 16, 1998

A former MTA official was named the city's transportation manager Monday and will coordinate South Pasadena's efforts to fight the Long Beach Freeway extension.

Stephen Finnegan until recently served as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's planning director for the San Gabriel Valley. His appointment follows the federal government's approval of the route in April.

"I am looking forward to the challenges of fighting the 710 Freeway extension, of getting the Blue Line light-rail project built and managing the city's other transportation needs," he said.

However, some freeway opponents have complained that Finnegan's previous job made him an advocate for the 6.2-mile extension that would connect the San Bernardino and Foothill freeways.

In seven years at the MTA, Finnegan also served as the agency's liaison to the California Transportation Commission.
