Cal Lutheran to Get Solar-Powered Carts

June 17, 1998|JOEL P. ENGARDIO

Cal Lutheran University will use $32,011 in grant money to replace gasoline-powered campus vehicles with solar-powered electric carts in an effort to help reduce hydrocarbon emissions.

The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District's matching grant requires the university to contribute $22,989 to acquire new electric utility carts that will be used in place of gas-powered maintenance and security vehicles.

Twenty carts will be equipped with solar panels to eliminate the need for recharging the cars daily, said Dennis Gillette, vice president for the university's administrative services.
