1 Killed, 3 Injured in Knife Fight at Graduation Party

June 19, 1998

A knife fight at a graduation party in South San Gabriel left a 22-year-old man dead and three others injured, authorities said Thursday.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., authorities were called to the scene of a multiple stabbing incident in the 8100 block of La Merced Road, sheriff's Deputy Steve Sciacca said.

One man died of his injuries at a nearby hospital, another was listed in critical condition and two others were treated for minor injuries and released, Sciacca said. The dead man's name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

"The cause of the fight is under investigation, and it is not known yet whether the suspects were invited guests to the party," Sciacca said. "The victims were invited to the party."

Although detectives have characterized the event as a graduation party, they have not determined who organized the event.
