In a 3-2 vote, the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council approved a monthly stipend of $50 for the city's planning commissioners, officials announced Wednesday. The money would be put toward the commissioners' travel expenses and general wear and tear on their cars.

The five commissioners, after comparing standard stipends with the League of California Cities, had originally asked for $75 per month.

"We deliberately picked a number that was less than average because we were trying to be fair and square about it," said Commissioner Donald Vannorsdall. But, he added, the commission is perfectly happy with the amount the council ultimately approved.

The two City Council members who opposed the stipend, Marilyn Lyon and Tom Hollingsworth, could not be reached for comment.
