Jockey in Good Condition After Head Operation

June 20, 1998| From Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Robby Albarado, who suffered head injuries when he was thrown from his mount in a spill at Churchill Downs on Wednesday, was in good condition after surgery Friday.

Albarado underwent surgery at Caritas Medical Center to have titanium mesh applied to an indentation fracture in his skull, the track said in a statement. The procedure is designed to speed the healing process and guard against a similar injury in the future.

Albarado, 24, broke his skull in two places when his mount, Presho, apparently clipped heels with a rival and fell during Wednesday's third race. Albarado was thrown from his mount and a trailing horse then fell over Presho, who was euthanized.

Albarado was kicked in the head during the spill and his helmet was cracked.

Caritas spokeswoman Alice Bridges said Albarado will probably be released Saturday.
