June 21, 1998|FRED ALVAREZ

Police officers from Oxnard and Port Hueneme arrested half a dozen motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol at a sobriety checkpoint that concluded early Saturday.

The checkpoint was conducted from 7 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Saviers Road in south Oxnard.

More than 1,100 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and officers gave field sobriety tests to nine drivers. An additional 30 drivers were cited for license violations and 17 vehicles with impaired or unlicensed drivers were towed.

It was the 10th checkpoint conducted by the Oxnard Police Department this year and the 61st since the roadside sobriety checkpoint program began in 1994.

The checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
