Ceremony to Mark Start of Wall Repair

June 23, 1998|JOHN CANALIS

A groundbreaking ceremony July 15 will mark the beginning of long-awaited repairs to the Signature Wall.

The Board of Supervisors this month approved a $871,000 contract for the work. Each homeowner must pay about $24 a year for 20 years to cover the costs.

Repairs will replace the mile-long brick wall with one that is taller and better equipped to withstand earthquakes. Workers plan to tear down the bricks and set them aside. Then they will put up concrete blocks and attach bricks to the exterior of the blocks to maintain the classic look of the wall.

The new 7-foot structure is 2 feet taller than the existing wall, which is leaning and crumbling.

Construction should take about 155 days.

The groundbreaking begins at 9 a.m. in front of the wall on Seal Beach Boulevard between Lampson Avenue and St. Cloud Drive.
