Jug Honors Toby's Mirth

June 24, 1998

As a collector of jugs, I was delighted with Charles Perry's Forklore column ("Mugs and Jugs," June 3). May I add a bit more? [The name of the Toby jug] came from a ballad published in 1762 by Frances Fawkes, English poet. Toby Fillpot was a rotund boozer whose earthly remains turned into a fine clay that was molded into a brown jug dedicated to friendship and mirth.
