SMALL FACES: Director George Hickenlooper and producer Chris Carter (the musician and deejay, not the "X-Files" creator) have shot a series of interviews for "The Mayor of Sunset Strip," their documentary on scenester and deejay Rodney Bingenheimer. Among the recent subjects are former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Brian Wilson, Cher and Brooke Shields. . . .

"Rage: 78-98," another film about West Coast rock history, is also in production, covering the two decades of punk. Producers Scott Jacoby, Michael Bishop and Harold Bishop have been shooting interviews with such key figures as the Circle Jerks' Keith Morris, Jello Biafra, X's D.J. Bonebrake and producer Geza X, who is also overseeing a soundtrack album. TSOL's Jack Grisham has written a new song for the project, titled "Spit Out the Rage." . . .

A record label is being spun off from the annual Hootenanny concerts held at Oak Canyon Ranch. Hootenanny Records, overseen by former Stray Cats bassist Lee Rocker and concert promoter Bill Hardie, will launch July 7 with a "Hootenanny Compilation."
