Four-Step Plan Targets Obsessive Behavior

"Brain Lock" By Dr. Jeffrey M. Schwartz, Harper Audio. One cassette, Length: 90 minutes, $12, Read by the author. Available in bookstores

March 02, 1998|ROCHELLE O'GORMAN FLYNN

Jeffrey Schwartz, an associate research professor at UCLA who has treated more than 1,000 patients, has put together a four-step plan to help people overcome obsessive-compulsive behavior. Relying on mindful awareness and a few simple strategies, Schwartz says people can "rewire" their brains to break free from continuous hand-washing, hoarding or countless other intrusive behaviors.

The material appears sound and sensible, but it's repetitive, even though it is greatly abridged from the printed book.

Schwartz is a narrator whose bombastic style is more than a little grating. Still, it seems a preferable choice than the printed text, which is padded with many stories of people helped by Schwartz.
