Teen Held After Fight in Boys & Girls Club

March 03, 1998|SCOTT HADLY

A Ventura teen was booked into Juvenile Hall on Monday after smashing another teen over the head with a chair during a fight, officials said.

One 16-year-old boy attacked another during the fight at the Boys & Girls Club at 1929 Johnson Drive in Ventura about 8:30 a.m., said Lt. Steve Bowman of the Ventura Police Department.

The youths were at the club as part of a Ventura Unified School District continuation high school program, Bowman said. The fight appeared to be gang-related, he said.

During the fight, the boy who was eventually arrested opened the back door of the club, letting in four youths who were not students and who helped him attack the other teen, Bowman said. The four youths fled after the fight and remain at large.

The victim required stitches to close a 2-inch cut on his head, Bowman said.

Police believe the beating was related to an off-campus row that occurred over the weekend.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the fight is also related to an altercation last week. Monday's fight involved members of the same two gangs that fought last Wednesday when a group attacked a Buena High School bus.

Officials from the Ventura Unified School District said they are taking steps to prevent any escalation of gang-related violence in the district.
