March 03, 1998|TROY HEIE

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man who attacked a parking enforcement officer with a hypodermic syringe last month.

Port Hueneme Officer Shane Norwood was investigating an illegally parked black Ford Mustang on Seaview Street between Surfside Drive and the Port Hueneme Longshoreman's Hall around 7:20 p.m. Feb. 20 when the occupant jumped out and ran at Norwood.

The man, described as a black male in his 20s, 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 220 pounds, lunged at Norwood with a hypodermic needle and knocked the officer to the ground. Norwood was not struck by the needle, but he suffered minor injuries in the scuffle, police said.

The man returned to his vehicle and drove away. Norwood reported a partial California license plate number of "3P."

Police say the man is bald with a mustache and heavy acne-scarring on his face. He was wearing a white T-shirt and knee-length denim shorts at the time of the attack.

The Mustang was a 1990s model with shiny wire rims.

Anyone with information on the suspect is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (805) 385-TALK. If the information leads to an arrest, a cash reward of up to $1,000 is available.
