Crop Walk to Help Combat Hunger

VENTURA COUNTY FOCUS | EAST COUNTY / THOUSAND OAKS

More than 200 residents of Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village will take part Sunday in the 20th annual Conejo Valley Crop Walk, organizers said.

Thousands of walkers will be out around Ventura County for similar events, which are held worldwide to raise money to fight hunger.

The Conejo Valley 10-kilometer walk begins at 1:30 p.m. at Mountclef Stadium at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, on the corner of Campus Drive and Memorial Parkway.

Forecasters say rain could dampen the event.

"It's looking like an increasing chance of showers for the weekend," said Gary Ryan of the National Weather Service in Oxnard. "And Saturday is looking better than Sunday."

Last year, nearly 1,500 county residents raised $86,000, with $21,500 remaining in the region to go toward Food Share shelters, community pantries and other local hunger programs, said Ventura County Crop Walk coordinator Cloene Marson of Oxnard.

This year, walks in Camarillo, the Conejo Valley, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard-Port Hueneme, Santa Paula and Ventura will coincide with more than 1,800 similar events nationwide, Marson said.
