Council Rejects June Vote on Term Limits for Boards

March 05, 1998|DEBRA CANO

A council majority has rejected a proposal for a June ballot measure that would set term limits for city board and commission members.

Councilman Bob Zemel proposed the charter amendment measure, saying volunteer board members and commissioners should be limited to two, four-year terms.

"I think the city needs new blood and new ideas," he said.

But the majority this week opposed the proposal, in part because it would cost $60,000 to $75,000 to put the measure on the June primary ballot. A second motion to place the measure on the November general election ballot, with only minimal costs, also failed.

Councilman Lou Lopez said council members already have the ability to remove appointees from boards or commissions.
