COLLEGE BASKETBALL AT A GLANCE / DAILY REPORT

Indiana Given Knight Option

March 05, 1998

The Big Ten Conference has given Indiana the option of either suspending Coach Bob Knight for a game or paying a $10,000 fine, according to media reports Wednesday.

The Herald-Times of Bloomington, Indianapolis television stations and ESPN college basketball commentator Dick Vitale all reported the details, citing unnamed sources.

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany declined Wednesday to specify what action the league has taken against Knight for his comments about officiating during last week's Indiana-Illinois game.

Indiana has three days to decide whether to appeal or accept the findings, meaning that Knight will be on the bench tonight when the Hoosiers begin the Big Ten Conference tournament.

The Herald-Times reported that the Big Ten cited Knight for violations of its unsportsmanlike conduct code.

Knight called the officiating in Indiana's loss to Illinois last week "the greatest travesty" he has ever seen as a college coach. He received three technical fouls and was ejected by referee Ted Valentine.
