Bus Program for the Elderly Is Extended

March 06, 1998|FRANK MESSINA

Despite poor ridership, a bus program for seniors will continue to receive funding through June, the City Council decided this week.

Council members said they were swayed by the transportation needs of elderly riders in extending the program, which shuttles residents from their homes to the Sea Country Senior and Community Center once a week.

An average of seven riders per week have been using the service since its inception in November. The program is supported by $8,580 in federal funds.

"Some of these seniors are frail in addition to being aged," Councilwoman Pat Bates said. "When you look at the people who are using [the bus service], maybe we need to factor that in."

Councilman Mark Goodman, who cast the dissenting vote, said the program was a waste of taxpayers' money.
