Vote Delayed on College Chief's Work

March 06, 1998|DEBRA CANO

The Faculty Senate of Fullerton College agreed Thursday to put off voting on a motion expressing no confidence in college President Vera Martinez for two weeks to give her time to respond to faculty complaints.

Last week, the senate delivered a memo to Martinez alleging she failed to work with faculty on planning and budgeting issues, repeatedly violated district policy on faculty hiring and refused to adhere to long-standing curriculum processes.

Senate President Mike Moore said it was unfortunate that the situation had reached this point. In the memo, Moore also told Martinez that there is "a growth in the degree of concerns about your leadership and its impact on the health of the college."

Martinez, 58, who is in her fourth year as president and whose contract expires in two years, said, "I'm disappointed that we are at this place right now, and I still believe that we have the talent and the commitment to move through it and learn from this experience."
