Decision Delayed on County Taxi Program

March 06, 1998|SUSAN DEEMER

Concerns about losing local taxi service prompted City Council members this week to postpone a decision on whether to join the Orange County Transportation Authority's taxi program.

The owner of Ginny's Taxi urged the council to reconsider joining the one-stop licensing program because its higher fees would put her company out of business.

"This is the kind of ruling that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back," said Virginia Borja, who operates the city's only one-car cab company and doubles as a driver.

The new program seeks to take over cab inspections, background checks of drivers and drug testing. At least 24 out of 31 cities have already agreed to join the program. The council agreed to look into the matter further.

According to the Sheriff's Department, current licensing fees are lower than costs to regulate cabs. The council requested a review of the fees before making a final decision at its next meeting, 7 p.m. March 18, at 100 Avenida Presidio.
